This is an AMD experiment
Yesterday we had a chance to compare the gaming performance of the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, but only in comparison to the Core i9-12900K. Now there is a test with much more participants. And in general it is already a full-fledged test by the famous TechPowerUp resource with a multifaceted CPU research.
But let’s start with games to finally close the issue. Let’s skip the tests in 720p as they are absolutely useless in real conditions. In 1080p the new processor outperforms its fellow Ryzen 7 5800X on average by 8%, and with Core i9-12900K the novelty performs on equal terms. What is interesting, in 1440p Ryzen 7 5800X3D breaks into the leaders, and in 4K, on the contrary, begins to lose even Core i5-12600K. True, the difference there is in fractions of a percent, so it is more correct to talk about equality. On the whole, even an ancient Core i7-6700K lags behind an extreme Core i9-12900KS by less than 10% in 4K, so it makes little sense to estimate CPU in this resolution.
The bottom line is that in games Ryzen 7 5800X3D is 5-10% faster than any other AMD processor depending on the game, and it has parity with Core i9-12900K. At the same time there are projects, for example Borderlands 3, where Ryzen 7 5800X3D outperforms even Core i9-12900KS by 15%.
As for performance in applications, Ryzen 7 5800X3D is expected to be slightly worse than Ryzen 7 5800XX due to lower frequencies, but the difference is within 2-3%.
With power consumption the situation is also expected. Ryzen 7 5800X3D consumes slightly more power than Ryzen 7 5800X, but the difference is small. At the same time the same Core i9-12900K, which is a direct competitor to AMD’s novelty in games, requires almost twice as much power. But in applications it is also much faster.
Unfortunately, overclocking the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is not possible right now.
In the end, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D turns out to be a really unusual and really gaming processor. In normal software it is roughly equal to the Ryzen 7 5800X, that is, and the more recent Ryzen 7 5700X, which is much cheaper. And there is no point in the novelty in such scenarios. In games, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is indeed noticeably faster than any other AMD processor, which allows it to perform at the level of the Core i9-12900K, sometimes overtaking it significantly. But whether the performance increase is so important in absolute terms, everyone will decide for himself.
