Researchers from the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) have presented a robot that can fly. Especially for this purpose, engineers have developed systems for controlling the movements of flying devices, objects or vehicles that can estimate the intensity of propeller thrust and allow them to move through the air.
The team from IIT presented a new framework that can estimate the power of flying systems that are not equipped with sensors to measure thrust force. This system will help realize the flying humanoid robot they conceived.
This robot can manipulate objects, walk on the ground and fly. “By gaining the ability to fly, humanoid robots can fly from one place to another to rescue people during debris, fires and floods,” the researchers said. – “Once landed, they can open doors, close gas valves, inspect rooms and search for victims.
The new thrust estimation system simplifies the design of the flying robot and reduces the cost of making it, because it does not require the installation of force sensors on each of the jet engines that drive the robot. Instead of estimating thrust from force sensor data, the system combines two different sources of information into a single process.
The first source of information in the system is a model that relates the commands applied to the jet engines to the resulting thrust. The second source of information for estimating thrust is the momentum of the whole robot. This is a quantity used by roboticists developing humanoid systems to control and estimate their movements.
