Apple

  • Apple unveiled a new desktop computer on Tuesday, which it calls Mac Studio.
  • The new computer resembles the Mac Mini desktop line, but it’s far more powerful.
  • It’s got a price to match its power, starting at $1,999 with a March 18 launch.

Apple has a new model in its desktop lineup: The Mac Studio, which was introduced during a livestreamed event on Tuesday.

The new Mac Studio desktop computer slots in between the diminutive Mac Mini and the gargantuan Mac Pro in Apple’s personal computer line. Like nearly every other Apple-made product, the new device is powered by an Apple-made chip — a transition that the company has been working on for several years.

Mac Studio features the M1 Max chip, and can be made even more powerful by upgrading to the newly-introduced M1 Ultra chip — a chip that Apple said offers, “faster performance than even the highest-end PC GPU available.”

But that chip upgrade, alongside included upgrades to memory and storage, will cost you.

The base-level Mac Studio starts at $2,000 and comes with the M1 Max, but the Mac Studio with the new M1 Ultra chip starts at double that price: $4,000.

Beyond the new chip, the more expensive Mac Studio model comes with more memory, storage, and a few extra ports.

Unlike the massive Mac Pro, the Mac Studio more closely resembles the Mac Mini — albeit double or more the height of Apple’s entry-level desktop computer.

Apple Mac Studio release date, price, and how to order

The new Mac Studio is available for preorder starting today right here, and is scheduled to launch on March 18. As mentioned above, the computer will start at $2,000 for an M1 Max processor inside with 32GB of Apple’s unified memory (RAM), a 512GB solid-state storage drive (SSD), and two USB-C ports up front.

For $4,000 to start, the internals get considerably boosted up to Apple’s newest M1 Ultra processor, 64GB RAM, a 1TB SSD, and two upgraded Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) ports on the front. Both versions have the same four Thunderbolt 4 ports, two USB-A ports, one HDMI port, one 10Gb Ethernet port, and one 3.5 mm headphone jack in the back.

However, keep in mind that these prices do not include any of Apple’s homemade accessories such as a Magic Keyboard or Magic Mouse — those are sold separately.
