Wang Shenai is 32 years old, and in the last nine years, she’s saved almost all of her salary and purchased two apartments.
She achieved all this while raising two children with her husband in Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu province in eastern China, around 190 miles from Shanghai.
Both she and her husband have undergone a strict money-saving plan that’s involved some major sacrifices.
Her story first drew attention after an interview with Tencent
It went viral, attracting a range of comments and criticism, but she reminded people that she’s never encouraged anyone to follow her example.
Her strategy is based on saving 90% of her salary, limiting her spending as much as possible.
This is a habit that Wang Shenai acquired in her childhood, as she explained that she grew up in poverty in a family that was accustomed to saving as much as possible.
The couple have had to wear clothes donated by friends — with the exception of underwear, on which Wang Shenai spends around $15 per year.
They also use second-hand furniture and avoid any social activities that involve spending money, which means no dinners, vacations, or anything else that might cost them.
