Photos taken on Sunday show that the beach has turned silvery because of the huge amount of dead fish on the shoreline. Environmentalists are now examining water quality in the region and conducting a cleanup operation of the shoreline.
“We can’t bring in earth-moving machines to clean up the dead fish, as we usually do when there is an algae cleanup on our shoreline. We can’t do that here. It has to be done by hand,” said Yvonne Rivas, the local mayor.
This is not the first time schools of dead fish have been found on beaches in this part of Chile. Similar incidents reported in 2021 have been attributed to low oxygen levels in deeper waters, with fish swimming closer to the shoreline in search of nutrients.
In April 2021, Ghanaian officials reported a similar incident in which hundreds of dolphins and fish were discarded on Accra’s beaches. Laboratory samples were taken from the animals, and initial results indicated a combination of “environmental factors” and “stressors.”
