Each person has his or her own potential “formula for success” – a set of methods, approaches, techniques, typical reactions, habits and behavioral traits that he or she uses to achieve goals. Similarly, among the resources available to us, there are those that we apply more often than others, and those that usually prove to be the most productive. And they are not always the same. How to find your “formula for success”, tell us in this material prepared by the book “Personal Strategy.
Regularities of success
The problem is that the most commonly used approaches to solving problems – not always the most effective. As a result, people, even with significant capabilities, do not necessarily achieve the same impressive results. In this regard, it is useful to study the experience of those who have managed to achieve extraordinary success.
Not to adopt it – real success is inseparable from the individual. Someone else’s “formula for success” is too individual to be used by anyone else.
However, people who have achieved impressive results tend to get them precisely because they have managed to find their formula. How they did it is the most valuable lesson you can learn from their success stories.
The patterns of success exist. And to improve your own chances of it, you need to identify them. Few people can consciously approach the analysis of their own way of doing things. Even fewer manage to systematize it and derive a personal “formula for success.
How to do such an analysis?
First of all, make a list of all your major achievements to date. You are likely to have them. Then for each of them, formulate some answers to the question of why you were able to achieve the result. Try to answer in detail.
– Under what circumstances did this happen?
– How did you do it?
– What talents and abilities have played a determining role?
– What skills have proved most useful?
– Whose help and support did you have?
If possible, try to verify your conclusions, for example by asking other participants or witnesses. Do not rely solely on your memory: the brain tends to forget negative experiences faster than positive ones, so over time, the past is presented in a more embellished form. For the same reason people tend to exaggerate both the justifiability of their actions and their effectiveness.
In the next step, analyze the correlations between your course of action and the outcome in each case. Write out all the recurring elements and, if possible, formulate them as a set of talking points.
You are likely to discover some patterns.
Ideally, they will form a complete method – this is your “formula for success”. You will only have to stick to it, realizing your personal strategy, which may have to be refined a bit to get the maximum effect. If you don’t have a complete picture, conduct additional analysis to identify the missing components. For example, if there are not enough strategic-level cases to see correlations, include less significant, tactical successes in the sample.

As an
example, here are the results of author Alexander Kravtsov’s analysis of his own experience of achievement. Alexander writes that he owes nearly all of his successes to the following factors.
First, he had mentors and patrons at every stage of his life journey. They guided him to his goals and facilitated their realization.
Second, he tried to find an uncommon, non-standard solution and his own way for any task. In other words, he applied his key talent – ingenuity.
Third, such qualities as willpower and persistence resulting from professional sports played an important role in his success.
Finally, as a final factor, he cites an increased willingness to take risks.
Thus
, Alexander Kravtsov’s personal formula of success is as follows
: “Find a mentor.
– Be creative.
– Work a lot.
– Take risks.
